Introducing Samantha

Ladies and gentlemen, behold the face of youthful canine disappointment. This is my friend Samantha, a hyperactive 8 month old pup who lives with her mother near the Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit Road. Samantha is sad because her mom (seen in the background) won't let her go out and play with her Bangkok street dog pals. That's why in this photo, Sam's mournful expression and furrowed brow make it seem, to the viewer at least, like her world is about to end.

Now, before you go getting all teary-eyed at this poor pup's plight, you should know that Sam's mom has many good reasons to punish her! Youth sometimes has an intoxicating effect (on both humans and animals) and the rebellious Samantha has been going through a stretch of behavior that has been, well, less than exemplary. For example, Sam has recently developed a penchant for digging, barking loudly at passing cars, and stealing ice cream cones from small children.

After her last transgression, in which Sam absconded with a 2 year old girl's cone of chocolate chip ice cream, Sam's mom decided enough was enough, and grounded her. And that means Sam was unable to join us for a roam down to the Chao Praya River when I took this photo. Her whining could be heard all the way down Sukhumvit Road!

Actually, I have to agree with Sam's mom on this punishment -- I mean, I'm all for being opportunistic, but you can't just take a kid's ice cream cone away from him/her. That kind of behavior has a way of coming back to bite you.

Great blog! I showed it to Rocky, my German Wire Hair Retriever and he says that he likes it as well. But he does have a suggestion.

Rocky thinks that your blog would be better if it had some smallish furry critters in it such as a squirrel.

What kinds of things do dogs over there chase?

I spent a month in Bangkok a few years ago, living on a soi off Sukhumvit Road. The 1 km walk from the skytrain to my apartment led me past a spot that where about 10 stray dogs regularly hung out. They glanced at me indifferently whenever i passed by, but I always wondered how they survived alone on the Bangkok streets.

Your blog is compelling. Thanks for giving these critters a voice.

Dear Casanova,

I happened to find your blog a few days ago.
Now, normally mermaids aren't that keen on dogs, what with being afraid of them and such, but i have to admit that you and your friends stole my heart.
I don't usually swim that far, but if i ever happen to pass your way i'll sure take a few hours to come and pet you.
Until then, i'll be watching from here. :)

Ah, kids can always get another ice cream cone. How often do dogs get to have ice cream? I'm on Samantha's side.

Good blog on what is called in Bangkok as Soi Dogs (soi means street). having spent some time in Thailand I was amazed on how street smart these animals were. I've seen dogs who watch for traffic when crossing the street and know where the best street vendors for food were.

Hi Casanova. Your blog is really cool. These dogs are out on the streets but it almost seems like they enjoy life on the edge. They all seem to stay positive and I love the way that you describe each dog bringing out his/her own personality. They are almost like humans. Reminds me of how human-like my 2 dogs, Shea and Shavo, are.
By the way they say Hi too!

This blog warms my heart! It's really wonderful to see things from the perspective of a 'dog'. Sometimes I grew up having lots of pet dogs, and somehow I feel like they really know what's going on, and they have feelings too. You can see it in their eyes.=)

I miss bangkok actually.

After seeing this, I would say I miss my dog back home a lot.
Ever since I came here. I hardly have fun with any animal.

I love the blog, but am heartbroken over the content. Please tell me that sometimes you help to feed/befriend these dogs. I'm a HUGE animal activist and I can't stand the thought that, even though you're giving these dogs a voice, their suffering is used for our amusement. I don't care if you only fed one, I can't stand the idea of them being ignored.
